Portuguese soccer phenom Cristiano Ronaldo tried his hand at playing defense on Sunday when he took to social media to deny blistering allegations that he raped a woman in 2009.
“What they said today: Fake, fake news,” the world-famous forward said on a video posted to Instagram, responding to a Friday story in Germany’s Der Spiegel claiming he raped Kathryn Mayorga in a Las Vegas hotel room nearly a decade ago.
“They want to promote by my name. It’s normal. They want to be famous,” he continued. “It’s part of the job. I’m happy man and all good.”
Vegas native Mayorga, now 34, reported the 33-year-old Ronaldo to local police for allegedly raping her at the Palms Casino Resort in 2009 — but she and the footballer reached an out-of-court settlement a year later where Ronaldo reportedly paid her $375,000 to keep quiet.

Now Vegas police have reopened their investigation into the claims — which include Ronaldo allegedly exposing his penis to the woman in a hot tub, begging her to “suck it,” and then forcing himself on her in a hotel room while she was curled up in a ball.
Meanwhile, Mayorga’s lawyers have filed a civil suit seeking to get the non-disclosure agreement tossed out.
Ronaldo’s attorney says they plan to sue Der Spiegel for “moral damages.”
In a statement to BBC, Ronaldo’s lawyer Christian Schertz called Der Spiegel’s reporting “blatantly illegal” and “probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years.”
