Pictures of three-year-old refugee Alan Kurdi prompted an outpouring of emotion and a marked change in attitude to the refugee crisis from much of the public and a number of European leaders.
Now, a Syrian girl has become the latest victim of the refugee crisis, reports Turkish state media. She drowned when a boat carrying 15 Syrians to the Greek island of Chios sank, and her lifeless body washed up on a beach in Cesme, Turkey. She has not yet been identified.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said today that the coast guard had rescued over 53,000 migrants from overcrowded and damaged boats since the beginning of the year.
Regardless, 274 migrants and refugees have lost their lives in the water surrounding the country.
Such is the danger of crossing the sea, increasing numbers of refugees have looked for ways to get to Europe by land. The Turkish city of Edirne, which is 10km from the Greek border, has been promoted on social media as a safer route.
