Spiegelburg loses out in pole vault

German pole vaulter Silke Spiegelburg failed to reach the 4.70-meter jump needed to secure a medal on Monday. She was forced to watch in tears as Jennifer Suhr from the USA, Cuba's Yarisley Silva and Yelena Isinbayeva from Russia took their places on the podium.

Not much in it

Nadzeya Ostapchuk won gold for Belarus in the women's shot put with a distance of 21.36 meters. Valerie Adams wasn’t far behind after throwing just 66 centimeters short of Ostapchuk to win silver. She was followed by Russia's Yevgeniya Kolodko. Germany's Christina Schwanitz came in 11th place.

Kirani James strikes gold

Grenada was free to bask in the glory of Kirani James' gold medal on Monday after he ran the 400 meters in an impressive 43.94 seconds. James beat Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic and Lalonde Gordon of Trinidad and Tobago.

Sanchez's moment in the sun

Despite sporting some rather fetching eyewear, it was Felix Sanchez's physical prowess that stole the limelight. Sanchez of the Dominican Republic stormed to victory in the men's 400-meter hurdles and took home the gold medal. America's Michael Tinsley took silver while Javier Culson of Puerto Rico won bronze.

Unchallenged victory for Zaripova

Germany's Antje Schmidt and Gesso Felicities Krause secured a respectable seventh and eighth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. But it was Russia's Yuliya Zaripova who stole the show, winning the race with an almost two second lead. She was followed by Tunisia's Habiba Ghribi und Sofia Assefa from Ethiopia.

Going for bronze

The German table tennis team wasn't able to maintain Timo Boll's early victory over Zhang Jike of the winning Chinese team, losing all successive games. Nevertheless the bronze medal is still a possibility when Germany goes head-to-head with Hong Kong on Wednesday.
 

Germany makes history

The German men's volleyball team has reached an Olympic quarterfinal for the first time since the former East German team won silver in 1972. Thanks to Russia's victory over Serbia, the quarterfinalists have now all been decided. Germany will take on Bulgaria on Wednesday.

Sixth place for Seitz

Germany's Elisabeth Seitz is leaving London after a solid performance in the uneven bars put her in sixth place. Russia's Aliya Mustafina won the gold medal ahead of China's He Kexin. Britain's Beth Tweddle took the bronze medal.

Final twist

China's Chen Yibing looked set for victory on the rings. But at the last minute the favorite's hopes were dashed when the final competitor Nabarrete Zanetti from Brazil swept to victory. The Brazilian claimed gold after an almost perfect performance.

Britain leaps to victory

The British show jumping team captured its first Olympic gold medal since it won the Helsinki 1952 Games 60 years ago. Nick Skelton, Ben Maher, Scott Brash und Peter Charles swept ahead in a jump-off against the Netherlands. Saudi Arabia secured a surprising third place.

Kenny triumphs at the velodrome

Jason Kenny took home the gold medal in the men's sprint. The Briton beat Gregory Bauge of France in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in London's velodrome. Shane Perkins of Australia grabbed the bronze medal.

Iran takes gold

Iran's Omid Haji Noroozi took home gold after beating his Georgian opponent Revaz Lashkhi in 60-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling. Japan's Ryutaro Matsumoto secured the last place on the podium.

Torokhtiy picks up gold

Ukraine's Oleksiy Torokhtiy won the men's Olympic 105-kilogram weightlifting in a closely fought contest against Iran's Navab Nasirshelal. Torokhtiy managed a clean and jerk of 227 kg to post a total of 412 kg, just 1kg ahead of Nasirshelal. Bartlomiej Bonk of Poland took the bronze medal.

Italy on target

Italy's Niccolo Campriani won gold in the men's 50-meter rifle three positions. With 1278.5 points he positioned himself ahead of South Korea's Kim Jonghyun and
Matthew Emmons of the USA.

China sails to success

China's Xu Lijia won the women's Laser Radical class to take home the second Olympic sailing gold for China. The Netherlands took silver, while Belgium took bronze
