When most people try to monetize their blogs they usually start with AdSense or affiliate banners. There’s nothing wrong with those methods and they can be a viable way to make money from your blog. Each blog is different and not all methods will be equally as successful for everyone. When I help people to monetize their blog I look beyond the obvious methods to make sure they are making their blog work as hard as possible for them. Here are some of my favorite less obvious methods that I like to use.
Many people forget about their RSS feeds when they are looking for ways to monetize their blog. In fact RSS feeds can be a great way to make money from your content, especially if you are worried that adding advertising to your site may upset your regular readers. The most common service for doing this is AdSense for Feeds, but Pheedo and Mediafed are popular alternatives.
Charge for Your Content:
Rather than adding advertising to your site, you could make money from the content itself. This is a great option if you have really useful content that you think people would pay to access. This doesn’t just have to be text content either, you can also do this for your videos and photographs. There are lots of different ways you can choose to sell your content.
As with the other methods we have discussed, charging for your content is not difficult and there are WordPress membership plugins to make it really easy. A quite common technique with both membership sites it to offer a teaser to your readers. For example, if you have written a useful tutorial, you could make the first part available for free but put the rest of the sections behind a paywall where readers would either have to become a member of your site or pay for the individual post to access the hidden content.
Add a Niche Job Board:
If your blog is about a subject that could relate to people looking for jobs in particular industries such as Marketing or web design then you adding a job board could be a good choice. A job board that is relevant to your readers is also a great way of adding value to your blog and providing an extra service for your readers. There are generally two ways to make money from job boards. The first is on an affiliate or CPC basis, where you receive money either each time someone registers their CV or for each click. The other method is to run your own job board where you change employers to list their vacancies on your site. This is not as complicated as you may at first think as there are a range of job board wordpress plugins and templates that manage the whole process for you.
